My 14-day-old parrot has a yellow spot on its back. What is it?

It's hard to tell from the photo, but it could be a spot with new feathers coming in. If the area begins to bleed, worsens, swells or a cyst/blister forms in place of a feather, or it is bothersome to Kiwi, having a vet take a look in person is best. Otherwise, just keeping an eye on the spot for now if Kiwi is otherwise doing well and healthy is best.

It could be infection or irritation. You would need to have her physically examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian to definitively diagnose this or other cause. Some birds will develop "stress bars" or spots on feathers when ill or when facing nutritional deficiency. Feather development is affected by an underlying cause resulting in darker coloration. It usually occurs in younger birds, but can happen in mature birds too.

The black spots you are seeing appear to be areas of blood, and this may be where feathers were removed. Usually the body feathers come in before some of the major wing feathers, so I would be worried that your bird is destroying the feathers itself. This can be due to a number of medical issues, and also behavioral ones. With a bird that is so young, I would be suspicious of a nutritional deficiency leading to feather destruction. From the photos, the feathers that are present look ragged and dull in color. If you are not feeding a pelleted diet, I would recommend switching to one. I would also recommend that your bird be evaluated by a veterinarian. He may have mites or a bacterial infection. There is also a serious viral infection that can cause similar symptoms. Have your bird examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet as soon as you can get an appointment. If your bird is caged with others, separate him until a diagnosis is made in case his condition is infectious.

Without an image, we can only provide very general advice. If he is behaving normally, you can monitor it at home. Watch for rapid change or growth, discharge or bleeding. Loose droppings, lethargy and loss of appetite are also symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian. If he is not behaving normally or if the growth is painful or interferes with eating, then he should be physically examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian sooner rather than later.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). Giving the upper eyelid lesion as well a skin infection is more likely. A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Your vet may want to perform a skin scrape to identify underlying cause more specifically. Disinfection can possibly be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. This could be due to an infection, to Polyfolliculitis which can cause itch, or nutritional imbalances. Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease due to a viral infection, Feathers mites, lice or ringworm must be ruled out first. Thanks for reaching out about Budgie and including photos. This could be a feather cyst, other inflammation or infection. A veterinary visit should be scheduled to assess. Hi Alexa, From the picture, I suspect Kuka has a ruptured air sac (lung) and air is leaking under the skin. In some cases, they can resolve but Kuka may need to have the air removed with a needle. At this time, as long as she is eating, drinking, and breathing well, try not to worry. An antibiotic will only be helpful if there is a bacterial infection causing his problem. It is best to schedule a vet visit first to try and find the underlying issue causing the feather loss and changes to his stool. Additional causes can include internal parasites, illness, nutritional issues, viral infections, bacterial infections, yeast and fungus on the skin, or even arthritis in older birds preventing them from properly cleaning themselves.
