My dog sniffed me. Can he get gastroenteritis from an infected dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | 4 years and 4 months old | 60 lbs

I touched a dog who was suffering from gastroenteritis and I didn't know that he had gastroenteritis so when I went home my dog sniffed me and touched me so will it spread to him? My dog was vaccinated back in 2016 and is 4 years old.

Hello. Most gastrointestinal disease is spread by the fecal nasal or fecal oral route. This means your dog has to come into actual contact with contaminated feces from the affected dog in order to get sick. By just sniffing & touching you, your dog should be fine, but do consider updating his vaccinations to protect him from other diseases that are out there.
