Why does my puppy's urine smell acidic? What could be the cause?

There are many things that can cause the urine to smell off: 1. Urinary tract infection (UTI) 2. Diet 3. Vaginitis 4. Abnormal pH of the water she is drinking 5. Diabetes (uncommon in puppy this age but not impossible) 6. Anal gland smell that you are mistaking for an abnormal urine smell I suggest you have her to your vet for an exam and urine test to rule out an infection and vaginitis first.

There are various reasons for a dog's urine to become alkaline (pH greater than If the urine has been retained in the bladder for too long, it becomes stale. Also, if the urine has been standing too long, ie was not fresh. Contamination with detergent from a collecting bottle that was not rinsed well. My first thought is that Lexi does not have a urinary tract infection. With her being so young urinary tract infections are not common. i would highly recommend taking her to a vet to have a urine sample looked at. It is important to know if blood and protein is present and sometimes you cannot visually see these changes. I would not recommend giving antibiotics to a young patient unless you are 100% sure she has a UTI. some young dogs have very concentrated urine due to less water consumption. Concentrated urine does not mean they have an infection. I would recommend increasing water consumption, You can do this by a drinking fountain or even putting water in the dry food. hope that helps

Unfortunately the concerns is that there may be a urinary tract infection which needs to be treated with antibiotics. I recommend to get her into see the veterinarian and have her urine checked for infection or crystals as these can commonly show up like this. Sometimes very concentrated urine can smell stronger and in that instance, you want to increase the drinking. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! First of all, if you haven’t yet, see your vet for a urinalysis because a UTI can change the smell and increase pH of the urine. Obviously, antibiotics are the way to fix that problem. If you’ve been to the vet and there was not bacteria in the urine- just a change in pH, then you can consider a urinary supplement like UT Strength which can help acidify urine. It could be from the antibiotic. I suggest you speak to your vet about switching to a different one. She may be "allergic" to amoxicillin. I would also suggest you start her on a probiotic to balance the good bacteria in her gut since she is on antibiotics. That should help with the diarrhea. I like Fortiflora (your vet may carry it) or you can buy it online. You can use any probiotic made for dogs (no human products) but I really think Fortiflora is the best. I suggest you give it for two weeks minimum even if the diarrhea is better in a couple days. So cute! She could have a urinary tract infection causing the problem. Your vet can test a urine sample to check for an infection. If she has one then your vet can prescribe an antibiotic. If the urine is normal then your vet can run blood-work and get an xray to look for possible causes.

Hi. It could be a sign of a urinary tract infection, kidney disease, diabtes, and other metabolic ans endocrine diseases. Im not sure of his age, so some of those are more common at certain ages then others. Either way, if this isnt a normal smell for him, it is an indication something is wrong. I would call your veterinarian for an appointment in the am.

Poor Kai! There could be a urine infection or crystals in the urine. Certain toxins can also cause this as well. I recommend to have him examined by the Veterinarian today.
