My dog ate onion. What urgent symptoms mean I need a vet visit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | 7 lbs

My small dog got into some cooked red potatoes & white onions approx 4 hrs ago. Could not have been more than a quarter onion. She just vomited a piece. Please what symptoms require a vet visit urgently?

Oh no! Poor Waffle! Decreased energy, pale gums (due to anemia), increased heart rate/breathing rate, vomiting, and a reduced appetite are all signs of potential onion toxicity. See the link below for the pet poison helpline to get more information on onion toxicity: https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/pet-safety-tips/are-onions-poisons-to-dogs/ I recommend you call them immediately, as they may recommend immediate veterinary treatment for Waffle based on the amount of onion she ingested, her small size, and the fact that she has been vomiting. Good luck, and I hope she feels better soon!
