Why is my 9-year-old dog panting hard, not eating, and throwing up?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chow Chow | Male | unneutered | 9 years old

My dog is a male, chow pit bull mix. He’s 9 years old. He’s sounds like he’s having trouble breathing. Panting really hard. He also isn’t eating well. He ate half his bowl in the evening and just tried to eat the other half but threw it up. What could be wrong and what can we do?

Difficulty breathing and panting could be a sign of heart disease or respiratory disease. Congestive heart failure would be the most common heart problem, while pneumonia, bronchitis, pleural effusion/fluid in the lungs would be some common respiratory problems. I would recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible if you feel Rex is having trouble breathing.
