Dog's hepatitis symptoms are back, worried about vet bills. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | spayed | 12 years and 11 months old | 7 lbs

Hi there, my dog was diagnosed with hepatitis 4 months ago. She was shaking really bad and that’s when we took her to the ER. Since then she’s been on ursodiol, but her shaking has returned and she’s acting the same as before she was diagnosed. What should I do? I unfortunately can’t afford to spend another $7000 for hospitalization. Any advice helps, and thanks in advance.

I would take Bella back to the vet for re-examination. Rechecking her blood work and performing an ultrasound would be helpful at determining if her hepatitis is back or if there is a possible mass causing the lab changes. She may not require hospitalization again depending on the lab work. Also, discuss your financial concerns with the vet. We often create multiple treatment plans, gold, silver, bronze, etc. to find something to help the pet that also fits within the owner's financial constraints.
