My 4-month-old bird is losing feathers. Is it molting or a health issue?

Hello so my almost 4 month old bird is losing feathers. Since a week I have been noticing this. Everyday he sheds atleast five to six feathers or maybe more. So I don’t know if this is him moulting or is it’s actually a Heath issue. Like besides this he just seems pretty active and vocal.

If he is not actively pulling out the feathers I would not be worried. It may just be a normal molt for his age. You could always get a feather supplement to help him along like this one from Nekton: https://www.amazon.com/Nekton-Bio-for-Bird-Feathering-150gm/dp/B0002DIM3C?th=1

    He may be molting. It is difficult to determine with any certainty from the images provided. If he is, simply provide a well balanced diet, fresh water and keep him as stress free as possible. Bathing or misting him with warm water will promote preening and healthy plumage.

It may be that he is just starting to get his adult feathers and as such is losing the baby "down" which you may be seeing. If he's acting otherwise healthy and normal, and you see small pointy "things" poking from the skin, then it is likely his adult feathers starting to come in. If he's itching and scratching a lot and losing large feathers, looking for causes such as parasites or infection is best. You may see redness on the skin, flecks of "stuff" under the feathers, or other irritation. A mite spray can help with parasites, however if you see visible wounds or discharge it is best to have a vet take a look. Making sure your bird is on a balanced diet can also help make sure his feathers regrow in healthy.

My bird is cocktail and is shredding so many feathers. Is it something to concern about ?
If Bobo is otherwise happy and healthy, he could just be molting. This is a normal thing that happens when your bird sheds their old feathers and replaces them with new ones. You will likely see "pin" feathers, or feathers that look like little pins sticking out of the skin in the places where old feathers were lost if this is the case. If, however, Bobo is itching, there is redness, new feathers aren't growing in, or he seems ill or upset, it could indicate something else such as parasites, skin issues, etc, that should be checked out by a vet.

my canary is about 3 months old she is a mix of a northern dutch canary and a beige satinette canary...she has started to lose her feathers and i am concerned because it seems slightly early for her to be moulting as she has not gained all her feathe
Baby birds can lose feathers in what looks like a molt as their adult feathers come in. If she is molting, you will see new feathers, called pin feathers, sticking out of the skin (they look like little needles). If she is otherwise healthy and active and on a balanced diet I wouldn't be too concerned, however you did mention she is a bit lethargic. If she is losing feathers and isn't growing in new ones, and remains lethargic or begins to decrease her eating/drinking habits, have changes in stool, etc, then seeking out an exam in person is best to rule out any issues such as parasites, illness, nutrient issues, etc that could be causing her symptoms. Keeping her eating and drinking, warm, and away from any other birds that may pick on her if she is ill can also help until you can get to a vet.

Feather loss can be from any number of things, so finding the underlying cause is best. Molting is a normal loss of feathers that occurs 1-2 times a year and all the old feathers are replaced with new ones. You will see "pin" feathers appearing on the skin (look like needles or pins) to indicate this is a molt and new feathers are growing in. Making sure Mithu is on a balanced diet can help ensure he grows in new feathers. Skin issues such as parasites, infections, nutritional issues, etc can also cause feathers to fall out. Treating any visible wounds, making sure Mithu is on a balanced diet, and using a mite spray to treat any external parasites can help. Illness can sometimes cause feathers to fall out either due to a lack of nutrition or from the illness itself. If you can't find an immediate problem, having a vet examine Mithu is best to rule out any illness. my parakeet starts to lose its feather the last couple of days. Would that mean it is sick?
This could just be normal molting or shedding of old feathers to grow in new ones. If new feathers aren’t coming in (usually seen as pin feathers) then there could be a problem. Thanks for reaching out about flint and including a photo. The picture of the feather appears normal. Heavy molts can be normal but also the caused by stress, poor nutrition, some viral diseases, external parasites (mites, lice), metabolic problems (liver, kidney) and others possibilities. Thanks for reaching out about Tuyu. Birds often have a feather-less area under the wing but is actively pulling out feathers, that is a concern. Self mutilation or over grooming can be a sign of disease, but also stress. Nutritional deficiencies need to be corrected, especially is on a seed diet. If the feather picking behavior continues, a veterinary visit is recommended. After ruling out diseases, anti-anxiety medications have been used in birds to reduce stress. Good luck

Thanks for reaching out about Sundar. Feather picking can be behavioral or medication. Check for external parasites such as mites or lice. Viral diseases such as Psittacine Beak & Feather Disease or Avian Polyomavirus, are also possible. Dietary deficiencies can lead to weak feathers that break or fall out easily. Birds typically have a bald spot under their wings, normally. This is typically a molding season, so some feather loss can be expected. Review diet, a veterinary visit is recommended to assess.
