My dog's cortisone shot in muscle, not under skin. Will it work?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I was given a cortisone shot to inject to my boykin spaniel. Before realizing I should have given it under the skin, I injected it into the dog's back thigh muscle. Will the medicine still serve it's purpose injected into the thigh muscle instead of under the skin?

Depending on the type of steroid, it may affect how rapidly it is absorbed or how long it stays around in the body. Generally, medications injected into the muscle are absorbed faster and go away faster. Medications injected into the subcutaneous space are absorbed slower and stick around longer.
