My dog chewed berberine supplement but is acting normal. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 20 lbs

About a half hour ago, I found a chewed-up supplement capsule on the floor that my dog got ahold of. The supplement does have barberry root extract in it (berberine hcl). The powder was all over the floor, so I don’t think she ingested any of it but some may have gotten in her mouth. She’s acting normally. Should I be worried? Do I need to watch for any symptoms, and is there anything that needs to be done for her?

You're right. The berberine is the only ingredient that would cause me a little concern. But the dose to reach significant toxicity is really high. You may see hypersalivation, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If these symptoms last longer than 24 hours or if Hops seems to be getting progressively ill, she should definitely get checked out. Otherwise I think she will be fine. Now that she has done this once, she may be prone to trying again, so make sure to keep ALL medications and supplements locked away from her! Have a great day!
