Dog on Heartgard, has soft/light evening stool. Are hookworms back?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | 2 years and 8 months old | 22 lbs

Dede was treated for hookworms in December 2019 and Jan 2020. Her still sample on Feb was negative for hookworms. She is on heartguard plus every 30 days. Over the last two weeks, her morning stool is normal, formed and brown in color. However, her 2nd stool which generally occurs late pm or early evening is somewhat soft and light in color. Nothing changed in her diet. Is it possible for Dede to have hookworms again. Thanks

Hello. It is unlikely that Dede still has hookworms, especially if she receives her Heartgard every 30 days. She may have picked up a whipworm infestation as Heartgard does not control this parasite. But as long as her stool is fairly normal, I would not be overly concerned with it being a little different in the evening. This may just be a normal variance for her. You can have her stool checked for whipworms, but otherwise I would not be overly concerned. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
