My spayed cat won't drink water with her cone on. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | European Shorthair | Female | spayed | 10 months and 15 days old | 7 lbs

Hello, I just got my female cat, spayed. We have her wearing a cone. But she refuses to drink anything. She has been eating a little bit of wet food and that's all. But if we take the cone off, she won't go to her food and water, she's starts attempting to lick at the incision site. I'm not sure what to do. Her nose is warm and dry, and she is just sleeping.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Cleo. I recommend contacting her veterinarian today. Her pain medication protocol may need to be reassessed. Additionally, subcutaneous fluids (fluids under the skin) may be beneficial. Wet food will provide her some moisture so continue to offer it to her. I hope this information helps!
