Why is my male canary's belly swollen after diarrhea? Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello doctor Please i'd like to ask a question about a male canary bird. The bird is eating and drinking normally. However he had diarrhea followed by an increase in the volume of the belly , the whole bird just blew like a balloon. What could be the reason , and is it serious.

Thanks for reaching out about your canary. Are you sure the animal is distended vs. fluffed plumage? Rupture air sacs, abdominal distentions due to liver or kidney disease, egg binding in females, abdominal fluid (ascites) and other causes are possible. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Heat support in the 80-85 F range could provide some comfort. Good luck.
