Why does my dog vomit old food days later? Should I take her to vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Female | spayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 125 lbs

My dog, she’s a 1yo Great Dane will puke every 3-4 days. She’ll puke up her food, but it looks to be food from days before. Her latest time had carrots in it, but I haven’t feed her carrots in a couple of days. She acts completely fine other than puking randomly. Is there anything I should be worried about? Do I need to take her into the vet?

There are lots of possible reasons a dog will occasionally vomit, ranging from the very mild (sensitive stomach, eating grass, bilious vomiting syndrome) to the much more serious (inflammatory bowel disease, foreign body obstruction, etc). I would recommend having Georgia seen by a vet. The timing of the carrots indicates delayed gastric emptying; food shouldn't be sitting in her stomach that long so it's worth looking into. This isn't an emergency if she's still happy, active, and eating - but I would schedule a vet visit.
