Are probiotics good for dogs with loose stool after giardia infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | neutered | 9 years and 2 months old | 20 lbs

I have two dogs who have tested positive for and cleared giardia. Once in a while their stool is loose/diarrhea like. I’m considering giving them probiotics either everyday or intermittently. Would this be suggested or a waste of time? I know I cannot protect them from things like giardia but I do want to keep them as healthy as I can.

Hello. I think this is an excellent idea. We are learning more every day about the importance of probiotics & their effects on the gut microbiome. Some dog foods even supply extra probiotics in their formulas, so this is an option. Giardia can be frustrating to deal with. Using a probiotic daily may help in combating any potential flare-ups.
