My hamster gnaws wheel bars and falls. How do I stop her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Female | unspayed

Hi I am very sorry for asking so many questions but my hamster climbs on her wheel and starts gnawing on the bars. Thane she falls down and climbs back up again. I am scared that when I sleep she will escape. It is the middle of the night and all the vets are closed. What do I do to stop this? I will take her to the vet tomorrow but what do I do now. Pls help!

If she is claiming up after falling, she likely isn't hurting herself. You can get a smaller wheel or a larger cage so she can't reach the bars. Provide additional chew toys or hides to occupy her. Make sure the bars are close enough together so that she cannot get her head between them. Hamsters are nocturnal, so she is going to be more active at night.
