My dog has a sore on her leg. When should I take her to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | 1 year and 11 months old | 5 lbs

My dog has a sore on her left inner thigh, and it's been there for a few days. She licks it sometimes, and I don't know if that makes it better or worse. We just applied some antibiotic to the sore, but I don't know if that will be helpful or not. Should I take her to the vet? And if not, when should I if it gets worse?

If it seems to be bothering Ellie or if the sore is getting larger I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian. I probably wouldn't apply any medication since she may be licking it off, and ointments can make some kinds of skin infections worse. If the sore is not going away in the next 2-3 days, if it is getting larger in size or if you notice more sores I'd recommend having your vet take a look.
