Why is my dog coughing and vomiting after taking medication?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | 1 year and 4 months old

I took hoonie to the vet last friday because i noticed him a little weak and his left leg which he have injured last time seems getting worse. The vet prescribed him some antibiotics and some pain reliever. Then earlier after giving him his dinner and meds i took him out for a walk. He did his business and we went home, then suddenly he starts coughing and vomiting saliva and rice (we gave him rice and chicken or fish since dog food dont suit him well). I am worried. Is he okay?

Hello. It is possible that Hoonie had a bad reaction to the medications. I would wait until he is due the next dose & administer only one of the medications ( either the antibiotic or the pain medication ). Then wait a couple of hours to administer the other one. This way, you can hopefully prevent another upset, or at least see which medication he may be sensitive to. Hope he feels better soon & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
