Why does my cat have black specks on her belly? Is a vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Norwegian Forest Cat | Female | 3 lbs

Hello, My cat has numerous black particles of dirt (or possibly blood) on one side of her belly (near the roots of the fur). We are seeing this for at least 2 days. What could this be? Do we need to see a doctor?

It's possible it's dirt, flea feces or it could represent infection. Collect a few of those dark colored flakes on a clean white paper towel and apply a few drops of hydrogen peroxide. Then gently rub it around. If the towel turns reddish or rusty colored, it's flea feces. If you cannot determine for sure if it is dirt, I recommend to have Helena examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
