My dog has seizures. Can excitement trigger them when I get home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 4 months old | 90 lbs

We have a 90 pound shepard mix who has heaptic encephalitis which has been controlled by phenobarbitol and supplements. In December we went away for 15 days and Nikki had not had any seizures in months. The day we got home, she had one that night and two more the next morning. We gwent away this week just for 4 days. We got home last night and a couple hours later, Nikki had a seizure. Can you tell me if these seizures can be brought on by excitement? Thank you so much.

Yes excitement can induce seizures in pets that have a history of them. Inaccurate dosing or missed dosing of the anti-seizure medication while you were away may have also contributed. Inappropriate or reduced levels of the anti-seizure drug in the body can cause seizures. Lastly brain tumors and certain metabolic conditions can cause seizures to occur. Might be worth revisiting with your veterinarian regarding the seizure episode. They may recommend blood work check to make sure there is not metabolic problem and would be able to also measure the level of phenobarbital in Nikki's blood to make sure it is at a therapeutic level.
