My gerbil has a smelly, black eye lesion. What is it? Can kids play?

We got our class pet gerbil today to keep for several days. It has a huge dry crusted protruding black lesion near his eye that smells awful. The teacher said it was swollen then popped and drained. What is this and what can I do to help him? Can my kids still play with him? Pet's info: Small Animal | Gerbil | Male

Peluchi should see a vet. I doubt it is anything contagious so handling him should not a be a problem. Still children should wash their hands after touching him. It may be a cyst but it could also be a tumor.
