Dog's mast cell tumor bleeding, active. Is an emergency vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | 12 years and 8 months old | 19 lbs

Hello. I have a dog, who is 12, that has been recently diagnosed with Mast Cell Tumors. He has great days and then occasional a rough day will come along. Currently is tumor has rapidly grown in size and while I was at work he has continued to scratch it and it has started to bleed. My question is whether to take him to the Emergency Vet or not. He is still very alert, eating, drinking, jumping, tossing his toy around. I am worried the vet will put him down against my wishes.

I don't think an emergency visit is needed but he should see his regular vet when you get a chance. I don't think you need to worry about a vet putting him down against your wishes. That is not allowed. A vet cannot euthanize an animal without your consent.
