My Yorkie hurt his leg jumping. What should I do if he's limping?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered

My Yorkie who is around 8 jumped off the couch earlier today to try and attack the cat and he hurt himself. I’m think he pulled a joint muscle or did something to his joint. He won’t put any weight on his leg and when he stands he shakes. What all could he have done to it? Is there anyway I could like help him? (In the last picture the leg that is out is the one he hurt, he has it up like this doing anything lying if I pick him up and he holds it higher when trying to walk)

Poor Max! Max could have a soft tissue injury such as a sprain or muscle strain, or it's also possible he could have fractured something. Max should be seen by a vet to determine the source of the injury. For now, keep Max as quiet and calm as possible. Don't let him jump on/off furniture, and keep his walking to a minimum. If he's not using that leg normally within the next day or two, he needs to be seen by the vet. Do *NOT* give him anything for pain. There are no human pain meds that are safe and effective for dogs, and anything you give him could conflict with a more effective medication that the vet prescribes. Hope this helps and he feels better soon!
