My male dog is panting heavily after mating. When will he relax?

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Labrador | Male | neutered | 2 years and 10 months old | 50 lbs

How long does it take for a male lab to relax after mating? Bcuz my dog has been panting heavily from almost an hour.

It should not take an hour. I would say 15-20 minutes maximum. Is the female still around? If so, that may be causing him more stress. If he still has an erection or does not calm down soon that would be an emergency and he should see a vet.

    Odds are this is still normal, but this is continuing a bit longer than I'd expect. Most dogs will heavily pant and act excited/tired for 20-40 minutes after breeding. If Leo doesn't calm down after being placed in a quiet calm room with no stimulation (nothing to be getting him ramped up and excited) for 15 minutes then I'd think about having him seen by a vet. Odds are he's fine - but we can't rule out a possible underlying heart condition or injury that the breeding could have exacerbated.
