My unspayed dog is licking her red, swollen private area. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 5 months old | 40 lbs

My Siberian husky, Ginger, has developed some kind skin issue near her private part. Hair loss around the area. She keeps licking the area. It’s red and swollen under the skin. It’s only on one side. She appears to be acting normal. She is not spayed. Can you tell me what it might be and if it might be serious?

This may be a bacterial or fungal skin infection. You will need to have Ginger physically examined by your veterinarian to confirm and treat it. In the meantime, place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent licking Keep the area clean and dry. You can use a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution to gently clean the area daily. Dry thoroughly afterwards. Your veterinarian may dispense topical and/or systemic treatments depending on the diagnosis, antibiotics for bacterial infection or antifungals for a fungal infection.
