My dog has a bleeding oral tumor. When should I consider euthanasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 12 years and 2 months old | 55 lbs

My 12 yr old lab/Pitt/boxer mix dog has a tumor growing in her mouth on her top jaw. It’s moving her teeth around and I’m thinking that some teeth are missing leaving a hole where there supposed to be and lots of bleeding. She won’t stop licking the tumor and the blood clots keep coming out. This happens 2-3 times a day. I have a cone. But it’s obviously not keeping her from licking and dislodging the blood clots. Any advise?... we plan to put her down in the coming week or two.

I'm sorry to hear that Lilly is having this issue. Unfortunately. there is nothing you can do about an oral tumor at home. You are correct, you cannot keep her from licking or biting the tumor and there is nothing you can apply to it to stop the bleeding. It is best to consider euthanizing her sooner rather than later. I'm sure this is really bothering her and I'm sure you don't want her last days to be filled with this uncomfortable tumor and wearing and annoying cone. At the end of the day you have to do what is best for her. Again, I'm very sorry. I know this is not a decision anyone wants to make for their pet.
