Are bone supplements safe or harmful for a dog's non-union fracture?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rhodesian Ridgeback | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 10 days old | 50 lbs

Hi - it's been 10 weeks since my dog broke his back right femur bone. The vets are saying this might become a nonfusion and we should increase PT for the next 4-6 weeks before deciding on the nest steps which consist of possible amputation. I am looking to do anything to help with improving his healing process. I found Boneo Canine which is supposed to help with bone turnover and growth. I spoke to a local vet and he said supplements can do more harm than good. What is your opinion?

Yes, I agree with your vet. Supplements often do more harm than good in these situations. If the fracture is a non-union/non-healing the supplement is not going to help. If you could post photos of the x-rays showing the fracture we may be able to help you better.
