My puppy has loose stools after reintroducing kibble. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 3 months and 4 days old

12wk puppy has had intermittent loose stools (5-6 on stool scale) for the last few days. Behavior, energy level, and appetite are normal. He is not vomiting and is still playful and happy. Stool is nonbloody, lacks mucus and is light brown. He improved with bland diet but still has occasional loose stools when kibble was re-introduced. No recent changes in diet, up to date on vaccines, no known toxin exposure. Should I be worried? Should I try changing his food?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry to hear Rusty isn't feeling well. I recommend taking Rusty to the vet with a fresh stool sample. There is a possibility he has microscopic intestinal parasites. This is common in puppies and causes diarrhea. I would not change his food as that is likely to make the loose stool worse. There is no deworming medicine that treats all parasites so even if he has been dewormed, it doesn't mean there isn't something there. Good luck and kisses to Rusty!
