My cat won't stop coughing. Can I give him human cough medicine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 4 years and 7 months old | 12 lbs

My 12 lb 5 year old cat suddenly started coughing today and it's been fairly constant...should I give him children's triacting cough syrup and if so how much and how often?

No, I cannot recommend doing that. For one, I cannot legally say it's safe, and two I cannot say it's the correct treatment. Boo Boo could be coughing due to heart disease or respiratory disease. You need to have him seen by a vet tomorrow for this.
