Why are my dog's temples sunken? Is it a health issue or congenital?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rat Terrier | Male | neutered | 4 years and 5 months old | 25 lbs

My dog, a 4 yr old rat terrier mix, has no muscle above his eyes. He does have a vet and he seem fairly unconcerned as long as he eats well- which he does. I'm trying to find out what I can to know if he could be in any pain or danger. Also if this is a condition he might have been born with. Beau's a great boy and I suspect he had a rough life before coming to me 1 1/2 yrs ago. He clings to me and suffers with non destructive anxiety when I'm gone.

If the temporal and parietal muscles has been like that since you had him then I would not be worried about it as it may be due to congenital conformation. If otherwise you noticed a deterioration in the last month or so, then a check up would be ideal as lack of innervation (trigeminal nerve inflammation, or miositis of the masticatory muscles may be present).
