New chick limping, swollen/bruised leg: Is it broken? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Chicken | Female | unspayed | 0.3 lbs

We just recently bought 15 new chicks. One of them was limping and cannot put pressure on one of her legs. It is very swollen and looks bruised. We noticed this when we got home, so we must have picked her up like this. My question is, is this a sprain, slipped tendon or is her leg broken? What can I do to help her?

Thanks for reaching out about Chicky and including photos. A physical examination must be made to determine which of these it is, and each will require a different treatment plan. There are some infectious diseases that can cause this also like bacterial infections or Mycoplasma gallinacium. Provide good diet and husbandry, especially heat support. Good luck.
