My cat squats frequently and scratches litter box. Could it be a UTI?

My female cat is squatting frequently and scratching a lot in the litter box - when she does pee, it is a normal size. Could she have a UTI?

Most urinary tract "infections" in non-geriatric cats are not caused by bacteria but inflammation caused by stress. This is called Feline Idiopathic Cystitis, and that could be causing Kahlo's symptoms. Have her seen by a vet for this.

This could be from stress and Lucy could have feline idiopathic cystitis. Most urinary tract "infections" in non-geriatric cats are not caused by bacteria (antibiotics kill bacteria) but inflammation caused by stress. This is called feline idiopathic cystitis. I'd have her seen by a vet for this behavior to have it diagnosed and treated. Best of luck.

It certainly sounds like Lolo could have a urinary tract issue as urinating in small amounts without producing much is definitely abnormal. I would take her to your vet. They may want to check her urine for infection and take an x-ray to check for bladder stones. Often cats don't have UTIs but still can have bladder inflammation. Making sure they drink plenty of water, and feeding wet food can help with bladder health. Good luck!

She may be developing a urinary tract infection. That may account for the trips to the box and straining to urinate. Confirmation is by an exam with your veterinarian and submission of a sterile urine sample for urinalysis and culture. The scooting may be due to impacted anal glands. Your veterinarian can quickly confirm this during the exam and express (empty) them if necessary. Given current events, you may need to drop her off at the clinic then wait for your veterinarian to call you to discuss exam findings and treatment options.

Some cats are very sensitive to change and stress and can develop urinary issues because of it. There are also calming food and treats that you may consider trying, Hills and Royal Canin both offer excellent diets for this. He may need time to settle in, he may need further medications to ensure his UTI is cleared, it may have recurred because of the stress of travel, he may have a condition called Feline idiopathic cystitis. This is cystitis or an inflamed bladder which has an unexplained medical cause. It is a common condition and is not normally a serious health concern, but can be very uncomfortable for your cat. FIC is more common in younger felines and episodes tend to resolve as they get older. FIC is different from a bladder infection, bladder stones or more serious urinary tract conditions, but can often present the same symptoms. I recommend getting him back in to see your vet and discuss these possibilities with them.

That can definitely be a sign of a urinary issue such as an infection or even a potential urinary blockage which can happen in neutered male cats. Stress and a dirty litter box may also cause a change in urinary behavior if your cat is not able to use their regular box. I would continue to monitor Franklin and keep his box scooped once a day to see how he does. If the frequent urination returns, he is straining to go, seems in pain or distress or begins to vocalize a lot, these are all signs of something more serious that should be checked out right away.

A true urinary infection with bacteria is much less common in cats then dogs, and less common in males then females. Unless there is a disease process predisposing to infection like diabetes or kidney disease. I would not expect a link between allergies and urinary issues unless as you say it is stress related. There is a syndrome in cats (many names) called feline lower urinary tract disorder (FLUTD). Basically it causes symptoms of a uti but there is no infection. In can be more problematic in males. It could be triggered by stress (changes in the house, change in litter, new food, not enough litterboxes, etc.). The Ohio State University has a good web site for indoor cat owners called the indoor pet initiative. There are other causes of urinary tract issues as well but it would be quite odd for both your kids to be affected. It is very important to make sure cats are able to urinate though because obstruction of the urinary tract can occur, more common in males, and this is an emerg

Hello. It might not be anything, but chances are, she has a bit of a lower urinary tract infection, or possibly some cystitis. Anything like this can cause irritation & the urge to urinate. Sometimes these episodes require an antibiotic, sometimes a change to a urinary specific diet. I would recommend having Paws examined by a vet. Sometimes cats will start to feel sluggish and uncomfortable in the litter box if they have a UTI, bladder stones, some inflammatory conditions, or constipation. Since you aren't seeing much in the box, it is hard to determine which is the case, but a vet should be able to figure it out on physical exam.

I can’t tell if my cat has a UTI or if she’s peeing outside the litter box for other reasons. 1. I’ve cleaned and upgraded her litter box, and she immediately took to it and started using it 2. She always pees in my laundry basket, atop my clothes.
The only way to confirm if it is a UTI would be to bring in Curie to your vet and have a urinary sample taken to check for bacteria, crystals, etc that could be causing bladder irritation and thus the inappropriate urination. Your vet can also help you determine if other causes, such as stress or the beginning of arthritis are also affecting her ability to use the litter box properly, leading to accidents. It would be best to bring Curie in ASAP so she can get checked and treated for a UTI as needed.
