Should I adopt a puppy with Neospora? Is it safe for my other dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

We are interested in adopting a female pup, Stella, whose litter tested positive for Neospora transmitted from the mother. She is not clinical, but is a carrier. She is on 30 days of antibiotics and will be available for adoption after that. Is there any reason not to adopt this puppy? Any concerns we need to know about? We already know she wouldn’t be able to be treated with prednisone or steroids in the future because of it. We already have a male pup. Would he be in any danger?

There is no approved or curative treatment for canine neosporosis.  Arrestment of clinical disease is best achieved when treatment is initiated before the occurrence of contracture or paralysis.  Since she has no clinical signs then I think her prognosis is good if she take the entire 4 weeks of the recommended treatment. I see no reason not to adopt her but definitely DO NOT breed her. Good question!
