My cat has blood in her urine and pees often. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 3 years and 4 months old

My cat has had urine in her blood since this morning, she seems happy and not in any pain but she has been using her litter very frequently (still doesn't seem in pain when using her litter) . I have a vet appointment for tomorrow morning but I was wondering if I need to take her to the emergency vet tonight instead? Thank you.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Callie. Poor girl. This depends. If she appears otherwise healthy and happy, eats and drinks plenty, you can wait until tomorrow morning. If she appears lethargic, ill or distressed, or if the urine appears very bloody, then she should be seen by a vet ASAP. Feed her wet/canned food, add water to it, and make sure she drinks a lot of water to help flush the bladder. I hope this helps!

It would be best to get her seen sooner rather than later. I think a day or two of waiting may be OK but not a week. That is too long in my opinion. She could have a urinary tract infection (UTI) and if left untreated for too long that could turn into something more severe like a kidney infection. Other rule outs would be: bladder stones, cystitis (inflammation of the bladder) and cancer. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
