Senior cat with liver disease: How to give meds if he hates pills?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 13 years and 11 months old | 8 lbs

I have a 14 1/2 year old male cat that had blod work last week. His vet said he has liver problems and put him on a prescription pill. This cat ,however has always had a problem with taking pills. It is almost impossible and very stressful for him to go thru this daily. My question is, is there any other form of medication i could switch to. The pill i was given does not desolve in water and when i crushed it to add to a syring he foamed and spit it out. It had a awful taste.

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Unfortunately, Denamarin only comes in tablet form. You could try pill pockets, or potentially crush it and mix it with a bite of canned all-meat baby food. If that doesn't work, and you're really struggling to get the medication into him, I recommend reaching out to your vet. We understand that many cats are nearly impossible to get pills into! There are other liver support options, such as milk thistle, that can come in liquid form if you need a "plan B" option. It wouldn't be quite as good as Denamarin, but better than nothing! Hope this helps!
