My dog has kidney disease. What diet and care can extend life?

My vet diagnosed my dog with moderate renal failure. She is recommending a prescription diet (Hills K/D). I have been looking at Just Food For Dogs Renal but she suggests sticking to the well known brands (Hills, Royal Canin, Purina). Is there any clinical research known on JFFD effectiveness? Also, shes telling me 3-6 months life expectancy, but I'm seeing that dogs can live for years with renal failure. Is there anything besides diet I can do to help? Supplements, anything? Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | spayed | 12 years and 10 months old | 50 lbs

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Callie. I agree with her veterinarian that she should eat a well known prescription renal diet. I have never seen the brand you suggested reviewed in veterinary literature which makes me question its efficacy. Has Callie had her blood pressure measured? Dogs will frequently have elevated blood pressure in conjunction with kidney disease. If so, medication can be started to lower it. This can increase survival times. I will sometimes place a dog a fatty acid supplement to help with kidney disease. I would ask your veterinarian if Callie could benefit from one. I hope this information helps!
