My new hamster is shy and freezes. How can I help her adjust?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Female

I got my new Syrian hamster Peppermint on Sunday. I’ve let her get use to her new home and haven’t tried taking her out or anything like that. I’ll sit by her cage and watch her and talk to her in a calm voice. The first night way alright, she woke up around 8 and was checking out her new cage. Second night she didn’t wake up till around 9-10. She seemed to be on high alert anytime I came over and talked to her. Tonight she woke up around 10 and freezes up anytime I come over.

Thanks for reaching out about Peppermint and including photos. Continue to monitor for appetite and water consumption. Continue to talk in a soft voice and allow her to get comfortable with her new surroundings. If decreased appetite of soft stool, a veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Good luck.
