My dog's anal glands leak often. What can I do before removal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 6 years and 2 months old | 45 lbs

My dogs anal glands are always filling really fast. She never scoots or licks it but her glands will just secrete without warning. She doesnt like pumpkin so I have had her on glandex for a couple months now but it's still happening. Is there anything else I can do before talking to my vet about having them removed?

It is normal for the anal glands to secrete fluid every time your dog has a bowel movement, as that is how it helps pass things easier, and is a normal process. If they are leaking in between movements, or getting overfull quickly, adding in other sources of fiber may help such as switching to a higher fiber food (if she doesn't like pumpkin), or other high fiber treat like flaxseed, carrots, or broccoli. If she seems very bothered, the anal glands are always full, or they appear infected, letting your vet know is best.
