My dog ate xylitol melatonin. She's fine after an hour, is she safe?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 5 years and 11 months old | 13 lbs

My dog had 1 1mg melatonin that contained xylitol shes been acting fine... And like her normal self. This was over an hour ago she even bad some honey and a treat. Will she be ok?? i cant afford to take her to emergency but i can call my vet tomorrow

Typically you see signs of xylitol toxicity 15-30 minutes after ingestion. If it's been an hour, she may be ok but monitor Middy tonight closely. Any concerning signs, get her into an ER vet right away. Otherwise, have her seen by her vet tomorrow.

Dog ate a melatonin pill that I dropped. The pill contains xylitol. Is melatonin safe for him? Will he be okay since xylitol is dangerous for dogs?
Hi, It is hard to say without more specific information about the dose , concentration of the ingested xylitol. In general a dose of 50 milligrams (mg) of xylitol per pound of body weight (which is 100mg/kg) considered toxic. Xylitol will cause rapid release of insulin which causes a rapid and profound decrease in the level of blood sugar (hypoglycemia), an effect that occurs within 10-60 minutes of eating the xylitol. Untreated, this hypoglycemia can be life-threatening. Signs of hypoglycemia may include: vomiting, weakness, lack of coordination, difficulty walking or standing, lethargy, tremors, seizures and coma. If your dog ate toxic amount take him to the vet ASAP, if not yet showing signs induction of vomiting may be done and if there are signs he will need immediate treatment. We have two dogs not sure if it was both but at least one got into a bottle of melatonin. They are both around 40 lbs. The gummies were 5mg each not sure how many they ate it was almost a full bottle of 90 and there are about 25 left. I did not see x
Generally melatonin is very safe in dogs, with the main symptoms of overdose including lethargy and stomach upset. Given that they are bigger dogs and the melatonin did not have xylitol (good on you for checking and letting me know!!), they should likely be ok. I'd just keep an eye on them for now. My dog ate about 7-9 small sticks of the peppermint orbit gum. I'm not sure when she did it, but it had to have been within the hours of 7:15 am and 3:30 pm today. Is she going to be ok?
I'd be concerned if the gum was sugarless and contain xylitol. If it did, xylitol is highly toxic. You would see effects of xylitol toxicity 15-30 minutes after ingestion. If it's been longer than that, Maisy should be ok.

I can understand being worried. Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs. The xylitol itself would be in the chocolate and if the wrapper was empty, then she wouldn’t have ingested any xylitol. She will likely be fine. If she was to get sick, you’d see signs of toxicity within 15-30 minutes of ingestion.

How can I tell if my dog has xylitol poisoning?
Xylitol causes hypoglycemia and potentially liver failure. If Arlo May have ingested xylitol in the past 48 hours I’d recommend contacting the Pet Poison Helpline (www.petpoisonhelpline.com). If it’s been more than 48 hours I’d recommend seeing your vet to have them check liver values.

Hey, my dog just ate a sugar free mint. I read online that most sugar free products contain xylitol and that xylitol can be poisonous to dogs. My dog is about 15 pounds. Should I be worried?
Hi there. Yes, if the mint contained xylitol, this is very concerning as it only takes a very small amount to be toxic - especially in a small dog. I would recommend looking up the brand name of the mint online to check the ingredient list. If xylitol is listed as an ingredient, you need to take her to the vet immediately for treatment.

My dog ate a whole bottle of melatonin
Melatonin is, in general, not a toxic drug. however, little is known about toxicity in dogs/cats. Adverse effects reported in humans include altered sleep patterns, hypothermia, sedation, tachycardia, confusion, headache, and pruritus. the main concern would be the sedation, if it becomes too noticeable then it might be a good idea to take him to your vet in order to get him checked. if he ingested the pills less than 2 hours ago i would also recommend taking him to your vet to get an injection to induce vomiting.

I THINK my cat ate a small crumb of cupcake which has xylitol in it! It’s been over 30mins and she seems to have normal activity level, but is it enough to hurt her?? It was maybe the size of half a small sized cat treat. Or smaller.

Xylitol toxicity occurs between 15-30 minutes after ingestion, and if it's been over 30 minutes and she is fine, she may not have eaten it. Either that, or the bit she ate was not big enough to cause any problems. I'd keep an eye on her for now, but if she is fine by tomorrow morning, there will be no need to worry. I hope this helps.

Xylitol is an artificial sweetener that is very toxic to dogs. Your dog should be seen by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER immediately. Xylitol ingestion can cause dangerously low blood sugar levels and can lead to liver failure.
