My cat is hiding after dog trauma. How can I help her feel safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Female | spayed | 20 lbs

My cat was traumatized by a dog. She is in a quiet room alone with multiple food plates, litter boxes, and waters. She was perched above the bed and i slept under her but after waking up to poop, she peeked out the door, rubbed her face on mine and has been hiding under the bed since. Should i stay in the room with her and close the door? Or leave her alone with the door propped open? And how long? The dog is gone and will never return. Any additional advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

So sorry to hear this happened. It is best to ignore her behavior. If you give her any attention you are rewarding an inappropriate behavior. I suggest you leave her be, put some Feliway diffusers in the house (especially in the room she is in) and try to act as normal as possible. You will cause her more stress if you are constantly checking in on her. I suggest you leave the door open to the room and she can come in/out if and when she pleases. I think she is waiting to make sure the dog is not going to return. https://www.feliway.com/us/Products/FELIWAY-CLASSIC-Diffuser
