Why is my senior cat suddenly aggressive, attacking, and needy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 11 years and 11 months old | 24.5 lbs

My 12 year old cat often gets aggressive w/ his sister when he’s hungry. Yesterday we fed him at regular time & 20min later while I was eating something sitting on the couch, out of no where, he reached over, grabbed my hand & injected his claws, yowled & stared at me w/ mouth open. He’s been aggressive w/ me before but this was the first time he’s attacked me while I was eating. He’s also overcoming his flank and is being super needy for attention but won’t play for more than a few minutes.

Sorry you are having some troubles with Monster! I recommend that you take him to your vet for a senior blood panel. They can check his thyroid as well. Hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid gland) is not uncommon in older cats and can lead to behavioral changes, more vocalization, eating more, acting odd. Get him in for bloodwork when you can! Thanks for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
