Can I stop my senior dog's prednisone due to weight gain and heart?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 14 years and 5 months old | 17 lbs

My dog has been on prednisone for three weeks, tapering down now to half a pill every other day, she has a heart murmur and Allergies at age 15 on steroids because of pain inflammation due to jaw issue, can I stop prednisone, weight gain worries me, cause of her heart.

I recommend to work with your veterinarian to find the lowest effective dose of the prednisone and to discuss any other alternatives such as pain medication, surgery to correct the jaw pain if possible or diet modification to help negate the weight gain. Have Mary Shiloh examined by her veterinarian at least every few weeks to keep any eye on her heart and weight. I hope this helps.
