Is it okay to rehome my old, blind, arthritic dog when moving house?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Springer Spaniel | Male | unneutered | 15 years and 1 month old

Hi We have a 15 and half year old Springer Spaniel, Spencer, who is blind and his hearing is going. He has arthritis in his legs but only seems To struggle when he gets up from lying down. He is wagging his tail and he seems happy. We are moving house and can't take him with us. A relative that lives in the country has said he will take him and he will live in a run with other springers. Our Spencer is very attached to us. I have been told it would be cruel to move him. What do you think? Thanks

That would be a very difficult transition for him due to his age, poor vision and hearing. He would be very confused. Also, it sounds as though he will be in an outdoor run with other dogs? Arthritic dogs need soft bedding and cannot tolerate temperature fluctuations as well. Rehoming a pet of this age that has been with your family is not a good idea.
