My 8-month-old cat has runny poop after food change. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

Hello! My 8 month old cat has been experiencing runny poop. It doesn’t seem like explosive diarrhea because when I go to clean it it isn’t splattered in the litter box. I feed her about 1/3 cup of open farm dry food in the morning and at night, and about half a can of ziwi wet food in the afternoon. I transitioned her from Purina (the food they used at the shelter) to the other dry food for a week and didn’t really with the wet food. Her poop is usually not very solid anymore. Any suggestions?

It could be the food transition that is causing the diarrhea. I can give you a home remedy for Penny to see if that helps. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, she refuses to eat the bland diet, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.
