Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 90 lbs
Hello, I recently found out about DCM in dogs from grain-free diets. I use Orijen food for my 1.5 y/o. It has great ingredients but I don't want to take any chances, are there any brands you would recommend for a large (85-95lbs) lab/Pyrenees mix dog that is about one and a half years old?

Not only are grain free diets implicated in DCM but actual, documented grain allergies are very rare in dogs. That is all marketing hype from boutique pet food companies. I suggest you use Eukanuba large breed or Iams Proactive Adult.

The short answer is we just don't know. Grain free diets and "boutique" diets are currently being associated with DCM but we haven't figured out exactly why, so we can't predict which foods are going to be a problem. I would recommend talking to your vet to see if there are any prescription allergy diets that would be appropriate given Sirius' other medical issues. If so, that's probably safer. We do know that dogs are fairly unlikely to be allergic to the grain in food - it's usually the meat protein that is the problem. That said, the likelihood of DCM is low even with the grain-free diet, just perhaps higher than other diets. I wish we could be more helpful and hopefully will have a better understanding of the cause.

Hello, I prefer to use the adult maintenance diets from Royal Canin, however most of the commercial adult breed dog diets from Purina which you may both get from your pet store are also great dog foods. Ultimately, any diet that is not grain free would be adequate and would also be dependent on if he has any other food sensitivities to chicken or beef which are the 2 most common protein sources. Always ensure that which ever diet you decided to go has been formulated to meet AAFCO standards and is FDA approved. You will find these certificates on the back of the food bag most often, and should be clearly stated by law. Hope this helps and best of luck.
