My dog is limping and won't put weight on his back leg. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 3 years old | 94 lbs

I let my dog outside this a.m and when I let him in I noticed he was limping, holding up his hind left leg. He can't seem to get up when laying down, but once he is up he will hop around. But won't put any pressure on his left leg. He seems to be in a little bit of pain but isn't whimpering unless we try helping him up. If he needs to move he will scoot across floor n sits and lays with the leg extended. will let me bend it. He's still eating and drinking. What could it be??

It sounds like the leg is injured, possibly a sprain or tear, or a broken bone. It would be best to bring Dozer to your vet to have the leg examined and X-rayed to check for this, especially if he won't put any weight on it at all. Until you can get to your vet, keeping him on kennel rest with leash-only walks to go potty is best to avoid further irritation to the injury.
