Why are my two-week-old kitten's eyes sealed shut with mucus?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 19 days old | 2 lbs

Kitten is about two weeks old. Nurses and moves fine. However only one to have mucus discharge causing eyes to be sealed shut. Tried warm damp rag and a lot of mucus was seeping out of both eyes. Is this normal for kittens

Although not normal as such it is not uncommon. Bathing the eyes with clean, cooled water or sterile saline eye was and cotton wool (throw each piece away and do not reuse to prevent spreading of infection) can help. There is likely to be an infection present also and I would get her checked by your vet as prescription antibiotics may also be required. Permanent scarring may develop but most kittens will have functional eye sight once recovered.
