My dog's skin issues keep returning. Are these really allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 11 months old | 80 lbs

Is my dog having allergic reactions? My dog's crutch is red and he licks the area a lot. I have taken him to the vet 3 times in the last 2 years with the same condition. They say it is allergies and have put in on antibiotics for 2 weeks, but symptoms come back months later. Now he has dry skin around his eyes, with no redness, mucus, pus, or inflammation. He also scratches his ears a lot (which also show dry skin). Is this really allergies? Thank you!

All of the symptoms you describe are common in cases of allergies. Ongoing medications are recommended for dogs which have recurrent symptoms to prevent skin thickening, secondary infections and scarring.
