Why is my German Shepherd whimpering climbing stairs after exercise?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 5 years and 1 month old | 90 lbs

My 6-year-old German Shepard is whimpering every time she tries to climb up stairs or onto her favorite chair. She doesn't appear to be in pain and lets me touch her legs and doesn't pull away. Could this be something like a pulled muscle? She ran around outside for the first time in a while yesterday and maybe she overexerted herself.

If she is whimpering when trying to do an activity that should be easy for her, she is in pain. Even though you have examined her, you may not have palpated all of the areas that could be causing her pain or discomfort in the same way that a trained vet would do. I would recommend that you have Wendy checked out by a vet to see what is going on. It could be a sprain but it could also be a fracture or an issue elsewhere in her body.
