My dog ate a seashell. Should I be worried if she swallowed a piece?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Portuguese Water Dog | Female | spayed | 80 lbs

I'm dog sitting and the 2 year old dog grabbed a seashell from a basket in a room she's allowed to be in and chewed on it, breaking a piece off. I don't think she swallowed anything but I'm not positive. I texted the owner as well. Besides watching her should I be worried?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Remi. If she hasn't eaten recently, then I recommend feeding her a meal. If she did consume a piece of shell, the food will cushion it and help it pass safely through her gastrointestinal tract. I hope this information helps!
