Dog shaking head after ear infection. Allergies or reapply meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 70 lbs

We took my dog to the vet a few weeks ago for an ear infection. She was given Posatex for 7 days, which cleared up the infection. She has been fine until a couple days ago, when she started shaking her head. She only shakes her head when she’s moving around. Her ears look pink, clean, and don’t smell bad. I cleaned her ears a day ago, and nothing different emerged, it was clean. Could this just be allergies? Just to be safe, should I reapply the Posatex or just clean her ears with dog ear wash?

It does sound like allergies. I would not use the Posatex unless your vet confirms an active infection. Doing this can create an environment where antibiotic-resistant bacteria can develop, which can make treatment really difficult. You can use an ear cleaner and try an antihistamine like Claritin or Zyrtec.
